The first ISTRY meeting was held in 1974 in Padova, Italy followed by one meeting every 3 years being held in the USA, Japan, Germany, the UK, and more recently in Florence, Italy for the 12th meeting.

The 14th ISTRY meeting was held on September 16–18, 2015, at Van Andel Research Institute in Grand Rapids, Michigan (USA). It included keynote lectures, seminars, a poster session and a social program.
